The same thing has started to happen to my 17" HP Envy too! I've had it for 2-3 years and it has literally done nothing but sit on my desk and play netflix. I don't think I've ever even moved it or taken it out of the house, and most of the time it's not even open because I leave it closed and run it through my TV with an HDMI cord.

Has anyone actually managed to get it repaired? Mine will be out of warranty now but I'd rather pay to have it stuck back together than buy a whole new laptop.

I'm in New Zealand by the way

I recently was contacted by HP and responded.  I will let you know if anything comes of this.  Not expecting much.

well keep us posted anyway 😉

Cost me $190 US Dollars for parts and labor from a third party. Repair lasted about 3 months and then it came apart again. I simply cannot believe the nonchalant attitude fro HP given this clearly widespread issue.

thats pretty messed up, its an issue in the plastic or design for sure.

this shouldnt happen with normal use.

RECALL?

I have looked at this issue on several machines and it is a cooling problem combined with poor design in the left hinge.  With the I7 the machine gets hot making the plastic brittle.  The way the hinge is mounted specifically on the left side in the case is poor design and when it becomes brittle enough you open the screen and it simply breaks.   If you open the case and locate the processor you will quickly identify the problem.

If someone had the money to waste it is an open and shut case of flawed design.   I am more interested in spreading the word and moving on.  Lenovo appears today to be the way to go with US support.  We have found they stand behind the product much better.

Recall?  By the way, HP has never admitted this is a problem.  If you call their support they act like they are hearing about it for the first time.  Admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery....  🙂

its funny they can still ignore all these post and people who reply, I've been buying compaq/hp for 20 years now and this j150 will be the last for sure.

guess they can afford to give bad customer services and be in buisness 😉

I bought an HP touchsmart about two years ago and it has begun to come apart at the left hinge as others have described. I only use the laptop at home on a table.  Is there some way to get this fixed?

UPDATE: HP sent me the canned "someone will contact you" reply on here, and they actually did reach out through private message. But, after some back and forth with model numbers and contact info, all has been dark for 10 days. They claimed someone would "reach out to me personally" soon, but I think 10 days is enough time to wait to assume they were BSing me.

I will never buy another HP product. What complete garbage.
