Dear All,

since a while I've had the problem that the HDD of my notebook is only sometimes recognized and displayed in the Explorer.

There is a Toshiba 256 GB SDD (KBG30ZMV256G) working as drive C: (Windows) and an additional 1TB HDD from Seagate (ST1000LM049-2GH172). This HDD has two partititions -

DATA (D:) and RECOVERY (E:).

Today I can luckily see (and work) with all drives, the SDD and the HDD. Yesterday, only the C: drive was recognitzed and visible.

Any idea what the problem could be? Any advices of what to do?

Thank you already for all the answers that might follow to my request.

Have a good day!

Wolfgang

Hi @Wollinger,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The intermittent recognition of your HDD could be due to various reasons. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Check Physical Connections:

  • Ensure that the HDD is securely connected to the laptop.
  • If the HDD is external, make sure the USB or other connecting cables are properly connected.

Device Manager:

  • Open Device Manager on your computer and check if the HDD is listed. Look for any exclamation marks or warning symbols next to the HDD.
  • If there are issues, you may need to update the drivers for the HDD. Right-click on the HDD, choose "Update driver," and follow the on-screen instructions.

Disk Management:

  • Open Disk Management to check if the HDD is recognized there.
    • Press Win + X and select "Disk Management" from the menu.
    • Look for your HDD in the list. If it's there, it might need a drive letter assigned or a partition may need to be activated.

Power Management Settings:

  • Sometimes power management settings can cause issues with external drives. Go to the Power Options and make sure that the settings are not turning off or putting the hard drive to sleep.

Check for Malware:

  • Perform a thorough scan for malware and viruses on your system. Malware can sometimes interfere with the normal functioning of drives.

S.M.A.R.T. Status:

  • Use a tool to check the S.M.A.R.T. status of your HDD. This can give you information about the health of the drive.
  • There are several third-party tools available for this purpose

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Ensure that your operating system is up-to-date. Sometimes, Windows updates can include fixes for hardware compatibility issues.
