2nd monitor

Hi I am looking to hook up a 2nd monitor but i dont know what port to use,  hdmi must not be correct because i purchased a hdmi to serial and notebook didnt see a cable hooked up.  so do i use usb to serial or usb4 to serial? any help would be great

I understand that you are looking to attach 2 monitors to your computer, is that right?

Not to worry, I will be glad to assist you. 

May I know the exact product number of your computer? Click here. Please do not share the serial number of your computer.

If you are using a USB to serial or HDMI adapters, it might not work. 

Recommend you contact the adapter manufacturer for drivers for the adapter. 

As you have not provided the exact product number of your computer, I am unable to pull the specifications and assist you in this regard. 

Recommend you try the steps suggested in this HP Article.

You do have an old school D-Sub VGA port, but the port most people would use is the HDMI. Why would you have to use an adapter? Most monitors have an HDMI input. Not sure in other words what HDMI to serial even is unless you mean HDMI to VGA and if you need to connect by VGA just use the VGA port. 

Your newer small oval shaped USB-C port is not compatible with a monitor as it is not Thunderbolt. USB 3 to video requires a more complicated adapter than just a cable....something like a docking station.

i tried using a hdmi cable but it did not work then i red on line the hdmi on this computer was for input only? My computer does not have the vga  port.  Maybe i did the hdmi cable wrong? i hooked to the cable to monitor and computer, clicked on the tab to find monitor and nothing came up.   i did the same thing on mo older computer using the vga port and it found the monitor so the monitor is not bad.

HDMI is not for input you can find almost anything online. Could be the cable?

I think i figured it out why it did not work,  i purchased a cable that goes from hdmi to d-sub as my monitor does not have a HDMI in and that cable is not working because i plugged the hdmi on the laptop to a monitor that has hdmi in and it works.   so i just need a new monitor with hdmi or a cable that works.  i wonder if i need some kind of converter ?  I purchased the cable from ebay so who knows if it was even compatible.

Yeah HDMI to Dsub cables give a lot of problems.

You can try something like this:

And then a regular vga cable but honestly a monitor with vga only must be real old and a real HDMI montor would be so much better.
