So, my laptop isn't particularly old. It's probably about two years old, and I've loved it since I bought it, even though I paid a high price for it. Overall, it works, but when I pay a price for something, I don't expect specific features to fail within two years of ownership.
The first problem I encountered while using my laptop was that the sleep mode randomly stopped working; I tried everything I could to fix it, but in the end, I had to have a tech friend fix it for me; that is no longer an issue.
The second major issue I've encountered is that I have two separate profiles on my laptop, but my main profile cannot access the settings app at all. When I launch the settings app, it opens the window that only contains the settings icon and then quickly closes. I've tried numerous methods to resolve this issue, but I can't because some of the solutions require me to be in the Settings app. Despite numerous attempts, this issue remains unresolved. The settings app works perfectly fine on the other profile, which makes no sense to me given that it is the same computer with a different profile.
The third major issue I've recently encountered is that my laptop randomly shuts down in the middle of something I'm doing, even if it's fully charged or partially charged, with no warning. The computer goes black, and the next thing I know, it's completely off.
The last minor issue I've encountered is that my microphone button does not light up to indicate whether it is turned on or off; the camera button does, however.
If anyone can help me, please comment something!

Hi @jconway,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you've been through quite a bit with your HP Envy X360 Convertible Laptop PC. Let's address each issue:
Sleep Mode Issue: It's great to hear that you managed to resolve this problem with the help of your tech-savvy friend.
Settings App Not Working on Main Profile: This sounds like a profile-specific issue rather than a system-wide problem. Since the Settings app works fine on the other profile, there might be corruption or conflict within your main profile's settings. You might try creating a new user profile and see if the issue persists there. If it doesn't, you can consider migrating your data to the new profile.
Random Shutdowns: Random shutdowns can be caused by various factors such as overheating, hardware malfunctions, or software issues. Try monitoring your laptop's temperature using software like HWMonitor to see if it's overheating before shutting down. Also, make sure your drivers and operating system are up to date.
Update the BIOS, & Chipset drivers:
- Here's the link to download and install the above updates: Click here
Perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant: (do not skip any troubleshooting steps if you feel steps are repeating)
To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.
- To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon
- Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC.
- Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
- Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
- Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
- Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.
- Open Power Options on Windows 10.
Click Change plan settings for any of the power plans. I would suggest you choose the power saver plan. - Now click Change advanced power settings.
- Under the Advanced Settings tab, scroll down to find Processor power management.
- Now, expand (click on +) Processor power management.
- Expand Maximum processor state.
- Click the On-battery option and reduce the processor state to 20%. You can choose any other value.
- Click Ok. The settings are saved, you can close the Power Options window.
- Enable Adaptive Brightness
- Go to Power Options select change advanced power settings
- Go to the Change advanced power settings. Expand Display> expand Enable Adaptive Brightness. Now, turn on Adaptive Brightness for On-battery and Plugged in options (whichever you like. Click Ok to save the settings.
If the issue still persists try uninstalling the battery drivers device manager.
- Search for and open Device Manager.
Click next to Batteries to expand the battery options.
With the options expanded, right-click each ACPI option and in the menu, click Uninstall.
Restart the computer.
The battery should now charge properly.
Run a battery test and perform a battery calibration on your laptop.
Battery Test:
- One way to perform a battery test is to use built-in diagnostic tools provided by your laptop's manufacturer. Many laptops come with diagnostic software that includes battery tests.
- To access these tools, restart your laptop and look for an option to enter diagnostics or hardware tests. This option might be accessible through a function key during boot or through the BIOS/UEFI menu.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to run the battery test. This test usually evaluates the battery's capacity, charge-discharge cycles, and overall health.
Battery Calibration:
- Battery calibration involves fully charging and then completely discharging your laptop's battery to recalibrate the battery gauge.
- Before starting the calibration process, ensure that your laptop is plugged in and that the battery is fully charged.
- Disable any power-saving settings that might automatically hibernate or sleep your laptop.
- Use your laptop until the battery drains completely and the system shuts down on its own. This might take some time, so plan accordingly.
- After the laptop shuts down, let it sit for a few hours to ensure that the battery is completely drained and inactive.
- Plug in your laptop and allow it to charge fully without interruptions. This might take a few hours.
- Once the battery is fully charged, the calibration process is complete.
If the issue persists, then please follow the steps mentioned in this document: HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures in Windows 10
Microphone Button Not Lighting Up: This seems like a minor hardware issue, possibly a loose connection or a malfunctioning LED indicator.
Refer to this document: HP PCs - Computer locks up or freezes (Windows 11, 10)
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
