i recently pulled my old laptop out to use it and i noticed it was running extremely slow so i reinstalled windows and upgraded the ram to 4gb from 2gb but now it says that only 1.6gb is usable. so i put the old ram back in and now it says that only 747mb is usable. I have tried many supposed fixes such as changing the ram to different slots, updating bios, setting most memory in msconfig, resetting bios, and nothing has worked. I can barely use my laptop because of how slow its running. anyone got any ideas?

ok i fixed it. i took my laptop apart and cleaned it out, it had a wall of dust that had built up around the fan.  and was causing my cpu to overheat which was probaly the main caus for poor performance. now my laptop is using all 4gb of ram and is running smoothly. hope this will help someone out there

Please describe the memory you used. What happens if you put the old memory back in?
