HP Pavilion g6-1251ea Notebook PC

I'm trying to upgrade an old G6 laptop. currently running a B950 cpu.

Board : 636373-001  7F11A4, 166F,  socket rPGA988b,  HM65 chipset, Bios F.62.

Runs fine with the B950, but won't even post with an i3-2328M or an i5-2430M. Nothing, just a blank screen.

What am I missing?

Thanks.

@DRF441,

Sorry for the delay.  Yes, thank you for noticing a BIOS update: could make a world of difference!

I am not a betting man per se, but if I were to bet, I would bet that this BIOS update/revision could indeed fix your issue.  Btw, are you getting the F.66 BIOS update from here: HP Pavilion g6-1240ee BIOS (drivers.eu)?  If possible, you probably want to use the Great Britain HP drivers update link: https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers.

Kind Regards,

@DRF441,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

You raised an intriguing question, because according to the HP Pavilion G6 manual as found here: https://www.usermanuals.au/hp/pavilion-g6/manual?p=9, Pentium B950 processor cross-compatibility as found here: https://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Pentium_Dual-Core_Mobile/B950.html, and HM65 chipset compatibility as found here: CPU-Upgrade: Intel HM65 Express chipset processor support, your HP Pavilion G6-1251ea Notebook PC should indeed fire up just fine with an i3-2328M or an i5-2430M.

Need to think this over.  You are correct though: it appears you are not missing anything that is glaringly obvious...

Thank you for the reply and the links, which I could'nt find myself.

Bios is currently F.62, I've found bios F.66, would that make any difference? I've been unable to find anything on the bios revisons for this board.

Thank again.

I had no help at all from the HP support site as the laptop is now retired, so couldn't access any of the drivers either.

I got the bios from https://drivers.eu/Notebooks/HP/Pavilion%20g6-1251ea/BIOS and have installed it. Just need to strip it down and try the i5 cpu again.

Should I do anything in the new bios before trying to install the i5?

@DRF441,

Excellent -the fact that you could update BIOS is promising!

What I would like to know, in BIOS, check if the UEFI boot mode is or is not selected.

Well, booted into bios and it has been updated to F.66.  There's nothing in the bios to set UEFI, and I'm still trying the laptop on Windows 7, so UEFUI might be easier to setup on Windows 10, but I'm unsure about getting all the Win10 drivers for this laptop.

@DRF441,

Even though I have updated all my HP legacy desktops to W11 -including the ones fitted with 2nd and 3rd gen Intel processors (there are ways to do this: Windows 11 Upgrade on Unsupported Hardware: The Cool Trick | Dong Knows Tech is but one example), I still kept one laptop, an HP ProBook 6560b, running on Windows 7 Ultimate for stability.  My point is, as long as you allow Windows Defender to run in the background (believe it or not, but WD in W7 is still being updated regularly by Microsoft!) and you don't go too crazy browsing around, you should be fine with W7.

For added security, I have an additional anti-virus program (Webroot) running in the background, but that is purely a personal preference as is the anti-virus program option.

Kind Regards,

Semi-success.  The i5 didn't work, so I'm assuming it is fried. The i3 does now work and is up-and-running.

So, still a decent upgrade on the B950, but I won't bother trying to take the laptop any higher as it's simply not worth it.

I'll now see what happens when I upgrade the OS to Windows 10, I mean, what can possibly go wrong?

Thanks very much for your interest and support, which helped a lot.
