After doing some research I was thrilled to find that my laptop had a motherboard connection and bios setting for backlight timeout for a backlit keyboard.  I purchased a replacement backlit keyboard part number 836308-001 and installed it.  I anticipated some additional configuration but it seemed to work well enough right away.  The backlight works and can be dimmed or switched off with F3. It times out according to the bios setting and lights back up if you touch a key or the touchpad. Nice.  All my joy was crushed when I went to log into windows.  Because I couldn't see the password I didn't know what was going on so I thought maybe the keyboard was using a different language.  After getting into windows via the on screen keyboard I found that the shift, ctrl, alt keys are not working.  In a hardware test in bios those keys are red and do not respond when touched.  Those keys will not wake the backlight up when touched.  I have tried a bios update, made sure sticky keys is off in windows etc.  I initiated a return with the seller but then I noticed something in the hp system info program that says keyboard revision version 45.4C.  Is it possible I need to install a different revision of this to make it work?  Or change some bios setting that I am not seeing?

Its very frustrating because I find it hard to believe almost every key would work except a few. I'm sure these are tested from the factory and don't want to exchange for another to have the same issue.  I have tried reseating and cleaning the ribbon cable with alcohol, no difference.

...I also tried removing/updating the keyboard driver in device manager several times.  It then occurred to me that it's a system problem after doing the bios hardware test.
