I purchased an 8540w and have done various upgrades such as 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD and secondary 1TB with drive caddy and am running Linux MintMATE 19.1 without issues. My questions is is it worth to max out the specs entirely such as:
CURRENT
- GPU: NVIDIA GT215GLM [Quadro FX 1800M]
- CPU: Intel Core i7 Q 720
PROPOSED
- GPU: NVIDIA N10P-GLM 1GB DDR3 - NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M or ATI FirePro M5800
- CPU: 840QM, 1.86-GHz (Turbo up to 3.06) processor 8-MB L3 cache, 8 threads
My questions are is it even worth it? Do I max out what I already have? No, not really, but my thoughts here are this is an older laptop and while the parts are still readily available, what are the thoughts on such a marginal upgrade?
Which GPU upgrade make sense?

Your sense is correct. The expense and hassle of the upgrades will not likely pay off in significantly enhanced performance. The MXM video card is particularly uneconomic if you get the Firepro as you would also need a new heatsink. The Firepro is the best card of the bunch you ask about but not by a whole lot.
If you can do the work yourself and get the processor inexpensively it might be worth it. I am seeing prices about $50 on eBay. Post back with any more questions and please accept as solution if its the info you needed.
