Hi Team,
I currently have 2 (8gb) Samsung M471A1K43EB1-CWE ram (1600mhz) on both slots and now I wanted to know if I could replace the second slot with a crucial (32GB) (3200mhz) and keep the 8GB on the first slot as it is? or is it necessary to keep the same make and model on both slots for it to work properly?
Requesting to kindly reply ASAP as my work is stuck due to less ram.

Hi:
As long as the Crucial memory report is right, you should be able to do that, but the 40 GB of memory will only run in single channel mode since the memory is installed in mismatched capacities.
Note that chapter 1 of the service manual indicates the max memory is 2 x 8 GB, but the Crucial memory report indicates the notebook will support 2 x 32 GB of memory.

Hey Paul thanks for replying so fast.
And btw I ran (memphysical get maxcapacityEx) code on CMD and divided the number I got in the report by 1,048,576 and the answer came as 64. Does that mean I can perform the upgrade as mentioned in the post?
also could you please elaborate that “40 GB of memory will only run in single channel mode”. I honestly didn’t understand this properly.

That’s great and btw it’ll be very helpful if you could please elaborate further on the point you mentioned in your first response that is “40 GB of memory will only run in single channel mode”. I honestly didn’t understand this properly.

Currently, with 2 x 8 GB of DDR4-3200 memory installed, your notebook is running the memory in dual channel mode (3200 MHz).
The only way you can run memory in dual channel mode is if your notebook has the memory installed in matching capacities in each slot (2 x 8 GB, 2 x 16 GB, 2 x 32 GB...)
Otherwise, the memory will run in single channel mode which is half of the 3200 MHz speed.
So, if you install a 32 GB memory chip and leave one of the 8 GB memory chips installed, you will have 40 GB of memory running in single channel mode (1600 MHz).
It's the same as if you only have a memory chip in one slot and the other slot has no memory installed--that runs in single channel mode.
I do not believe that your notebook's memory performance will be degraded that much with the memory running in single channel mode.

Hi Paul,
Hope your doing well!
Regarding the conversation we had earlier over here, can you please suggest me a few other brands for RAM?
as crucial is all sold out and its been a week already.
Currently I have Samsung RAMS (8*2).

Hi:
I'm doing fine and I hope you are too.
I went to the Amazon.in site and they have the 16 GB Crucial memory as the deal of the day,
Usually, the price is not listed if it is sold out.
I am not a memory expert, which is why I always recommend Crucial because they guarantee compatibility.
All I can tell you is whatever 16 GB DDR4-3200 memory you buy it must be CL22.
