HP Probook 440 G4
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've got a Probook 440 G4 (i5-7200) that:

1. Does not charge the battery - bought a new HP battery but still won't charge. Battery now at 0%.

2. Although it won't charge the battery, the computer boots fine off the power supply.

3. But the system does not detect the AC adapter. On boot it says battery is low and suggest plugging in.

4. Have tried updating bios with download windows exe updater but cannot continue because battery is below 50% and AC adapter is not detected.

5. Have tried to update BIOS via BIOS on boot but cannot proceed due to same reasons.

Current BIOS is P85 1.02 and available update is P85 1.45. How do I do this update?

Also, is there any way to charge the  battery outside the laptop? So I can at least update the BIOS.

Thanks, Any help is appreciated.

Hi @RGDuarte

I highly recommend saving any work you do to an external storage device.  Do be aware that there will be problems with BIOS settings since the main battery is where the BIOS gets its current to hold the date/time and other settings in the BIOS.

From the description you have given, it sounds as if there are issues with  electronic components or traces in the charging circuit. HP would replace the system board rather than the failed components.

The problem can be repaired by a competent laptop service engineer at a laptop shop.

I have a similar problem but at least my 255 g7 charges when it's off, updating the bios without the power adapter holding down windows+b didn't fix it but now I have the updated bios, any news?

Did you also install a virtual machine before this happened?

The voltmeter measures 13.15 on the power jack in my case, shouldn't it exceed 19 instead? I will try this

when it arrives and let you know

It turns out that the old power adapter supplies 15.13 Volts despite nominally 19 and so the problem persists even when powering through the jack adapter

I unplugged the old power adapter and plugged back its own and the charge is working as it should again, the voltmeter now reads 19.77
