Lately, my 65w adapter attached to my 8540w is getting very hot. However, when I investigated further, I see that the 65w one is said to be sufficient for this mobile workstation. I looked extensively for the HP link that specifies the correct adapter for this model, buti found only references to models sold on Amazon, which all indicate 65w. Please advise. TIA.

Welcome to our HP User Forum!
I must disagree that a 65-watt power adaptor is sufficient, the manual (p. 32) specifically mentions a 90-watt unit -even a 120-watt and 150-watt power unit: c03382696.pdf (hp.com)
Purchase option link (check with Amazon Canada): 90W AC Adapter Laptop Charger for Hp Elitebook 8460p 8470p 8440p 8560p 8760p 8460w 8470w 8570w 8770w....
Hope this was helpful.
