- AC adapter makes high pitched sound

My laptop was fully charged and all of a sudden the AC adapter started to make a high pitched sound. After removing the 'charge plug' the sound dissapeared after roughly 3 seconds. The adapter still felt as cold as it does when it was not in use.
When my laptop stays at home it usually is plugged in with the AC adapter all day out of comfort. Previously i was reassured this should not be a problem, but this sound came. The chargers has not fallen from a distance greater than 2 cm and has not been exposed to any water whatsoever.
I am still under warranty, but can not wait for a new AC adapter to arrive due to a project which will be finished within 2 weeks. When the project is done I can so until then I will not replace it if it does not pose a threat.
My questions are:
- Is my AC adapter defect?
- Can this be a fire hazard?
and if it is indeed defect:
- Is an immediate replacement necessary?
- How can I get a replacement for a single component?
