My laptop charger doesn't charge while the laptop is on; it only starts charging the moment I turn it off.
When I tried it with my friend's adapter, which has the same specifications, there were no problems. What can i do?Please help me.

Hi @TursuRick

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for explaining the situation and for testing with another adapter—that’s a very helpful step. I understand how inconvenient it feels when your laptop only charges while powered off.

Let’s go through some practical steps to get this resolved.

Steps to Troubleshoot Charging Issue:

Inspect the Adapter and Cable

  • Check for any visible damage, bends, or fraying on the cable and connector.
  • Ensure the adapter is firmly connected to both the laptop and the power outlet.

Verify Power Source

  • Plug the adapter into a different wall socket to rule out power supply issues.
  • Avoid using extension cords or surge protectors during testing.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Shut down the laptop.
  • Disconnect the adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and adapter, then power on the laptop.

Check Battery and Adapter Status in BIOS

  • Restart the laptop and press Esc repeatedly, then F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Look for Battery and AC Adapter status under System Information.
  • Confirm if the adapter is detected correctly.

Update BIOS and Power Drivers

  • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and ensure all updates are installed.
  • Visit HP Support to download the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for your model: HP PCs - Updating Drivers and Software

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Press Esc during startup, then F2 for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run the Battery Test and AC Adapter Test to check for issues.

Please try these steps and let me know how the laptop responds. If the adapter works fine on another device but not on yours while powered on, the issue could be with the adapter’s internal components or the power delivery circuit in the laptop.

If my response helped, please mark it as an Accepted Solution It helps others and spreads support. 💙 Also, tapping "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" makes a big difference! Thanks! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
