Help! my new/used HP Pavilion g7-2235dx is overheating, the CPU to be specific. I just took it all apart and put some new Thermal Paste and cleaned the Heat Sink Fins, they were very dirty, in fact 100% Plugged up, went back together good. Before I took it apart it was very hot, I think 127 Celsius as shown by Seccy, and could barely touch the little metal piece by the Exhaust. It never shut down while I was using it but may have with the previous owner. The Speccy here shows only 106 °C and Now, after the cleaning, only running in the 80-100 Celsius range while doing nothing. What else do I need to check to Hopefully fix this? I'll leave the Speccy because that is the only diagnostics I've done yet. I want to install W 8.1 if I can get it all healthy. I also poked around looking at Processes that were running etc. but really...I'm no exactly sure what I'm looking at.
Also, the guy that had it before me tried to Upgrade to W8.1 but it would not work. Now I see that there are five Partitions, I don't think this is right, though don't know if this has anything to do with the overheating. I wonder, would Installing Windows 8.1 Fix the overheating?
I also went through all the Overheating Proceedure at this site. Flashed the BIOS to the newest along with that. Did not run UEFI Hardware Tests after reading all the bad press on this pc with W8. I did however run a Linux Live Session and all was running cool like it should.
EDIT: Been searching around this and other forums, it seems as though Windows 8-8.1 don't work well on this laptop. Are there Drivers for this laptop for Windows 7? I've read that this OS works better on this computer. I also ran into a lot of deadends that makes me not want to spend lot's of time installing Windows 8.1 if it will have the same outcome.
Another thing if you don't mind: Would installing the newest AMD Firmware from their site fix this overheating problem? It's up to like 14.xx while the one on this site is at like 8.xx. Thanks, pcpunk

Hi! @pcpunk, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!
I understand that your laptop is getting overheated.
As you mentioned that you have updated the BIOS to the latest version. But the issue still persists.
Please try few steps recommended below.
The following list describes some causes of excessive heat:
Dust inside the laptop.
A new component, such as a hard drive, is added. The extra component causes the power supply to work harder and generate more heat. Extra heat also radiates off the new component and adds to the temperature inside the case.
Over time, some cooling fans might slow down and wear out, as the laptop is getting hot, depending on the usage of the laptop.
High ambient room temperature.
Refer this document to troubleshoot overheating issues.
If the issue still persists, It is a hardware issue please contact HP support for more assistance.

Keep me posted!
Have a great day ahead! 🙂

Chetan, thanks for the reply. Love your user name! As you can see I've already done all the work, let me break it down because that post was a little TMIformation.
1. Complete Tearndown, Clean with Thermal Paste
2. Still hot but better.
3. Already Tested the Hardware by running LinuxLiveSession. The Linux Live Session eliminates the Hardware as the issue, and clearly, IMO, says that it is something to do with Software, either Drivers or OS would be my best guess. I've seen many on the net trying to install W7 to this pc, not all say why, but some are saying W8-8.1 are making it run hot. My inquiry here is more specific as to whether or not this is becuase of Windows 8, and if Windows 8.1 may fix it?
Thanks Chetan, pcpunk

@pcpunk, thanks for your reply and time.
I'm glad that you liked my username.
Most of the glitches are fixed by updating to windows 8.1. I would recommend you to update the operating system to windows 8.1.
Also, refer this article to know how to install use windows 8.1.
After upgrading the operating system if the issue still persists.
Please try running a system diagnostics from F2 and let me know the results.
I'll watch your reply!
Cheers! 🙂

Upgrading now. Tried to isntall a few Updates to allow the Upgrade and got an Error saying "This update it not applicable to your pc." Then went to shut down and the darn thing is Upgrading now? And why do they MS refer to it as Updating? it is actually an Upgrade of sorts right? haha, those crazy ms folks.
Signing off, pcpunk

@pcpunk, thanks for the response.
Thanks for trying out the steps.
Please try few steps recommended below.
First force Windows to check for updates and then Install all important and all optional Updates that are found. During this procedure DO NOT bypass the installation of Microsoft .NET Framework (e.g. Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 for Windows 8 (KB2901982).
To force Windows to check for updates:
1. Press Windows + R keys to load the Run dialog box.
2. Type the following command to open Windows Update and press Enter.
wuapp.exe
3. Press Check for updates.
4. Choose the Important Updates link.
5. Uncheck and re-check the Name checkbox to select all important Updates and then choose Optional.
6. Uncheck and re-check the Name checkbox to select all Optional Updates found and then press Install.
Hope this helps!
Have a lovely day ahead! 🙂

That's a wealth of information MrRobot, I use it if this fails. One thing I was concerned about is, I had a USB in a Port when the Upgrade started and don't know if that is going to effect anything. In Windows 7 Reboot after updates fail when usb is in.

@pcpunk, Thanks for the quick response.
I don't think that should do any to harm your PC.
So I would suggest you try the steps from my previous post and let me know if the issue persists.
Cheers! 🙂

Windows Upgrade done. Still Overheating at 87-109 Celsius. Here is the HWmonitor output. Right now one core is at 108. Someone messed up when matching the components on this and many other AMD based laptops. I've now wasted hours with this machine, do you have any other Solutions? I'll look at previous posts but I think this is all a waste of my time. All your help is greatly appreciated but this is a somewhat common issue that I still can't find an answer to?
Temperature 0 87 degC (189 degF) (Package)
Voltage 0 0.83 Volts (Cores)
Voltage 1 0.99 Volts (Uncore)
Clock Speed 0 1397.32 MHz (Core #0)
Clock Speed 1 1397.32 MHz (Core #1)
Clock Speed 2 1397.32 MHz (Core #2)
Clock Speed 3 1397.32 MHz (Core #3)
