8 + 4 will work but not as dual channel...you can have 4 + 4 or 8 + 8 or even 16 + 16 as dual channel on that model. Used DDR4-2400 SO-DIMM which will run at 2133 mbps. Dual channel takes two modules of the same capacity.

Hi,

Max RAM is 16GB of DDR4 2133MHz (2x8GB)

At the moment you have one 4GB module and one empty slot.

So you can add another 8GB module in the empty slot for a total of 12GB (no problem)

The RAM will run in dual channel mode if the sticks are of the same capacity, so you could get a 16GB kit.

Example:

https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/hp---compaq/hp-15-ay517tx#memory

On page 56 of service manual you can see the steps to install the RAM

You should also upgrade the hard drive to an SSD which would give a great boost to everyday performance.

Hope it helps,

David
