I have a small, old HP laptop. It doesn't have a number pad. If I want to put an accent on a letter, how do I do it with the ALT key? Is there another way?

Hi @stmarysontario,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I Understand that you have a small or older HP laptop without a numeric keypad, it might be challenging to use the traditional ALT key code method for typing accented letters. However, I would request you to please follow the steps:

Using the On-Screen Keyboard:

  • Open the On-Screen Keyboard by searching for it in the Windows search bar.
  • You can use the on-screen keyboard for typing ALT codes if your physical keyboard lacks a numeric keypad.

Character Map:

  • In the Start Menu, type "Character Map" and select it from the search results.
  • In the Character Map, find and select the accented character you need, and choose ‘Copy’.
  • You can then paste the character into your document.

Keyboard Shortcuts:

  • Depending on your keyboard layout and language settings, some accented characters might be accessible via shortcut keys.

Change Keyboard Layout:

  • Consider changing your keyboard input settings to a layout that includes accented characters directly, such as the US International keyboard layout.
  • To change your keyboard layout, go to Settings > Time & language > Language & region, and add a new keyboard layout under the language options.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!
