Sorry that you are having so much trouble with the drive.

I wonder if it is possible that 1 TB is too much storage (which it shouldn't be), or the notebook for some crazy reason doesn't like the Samsung drive?

Other suggestions would be to try a 500 GB SSD or a Western Digital Blue SN570 NVMe SSD instead.

It is another good but inexpensive drive.

It is baffling to me why it isn't just working.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to help you with why the hardware diagnostics program won't run.

I once had a HP support assistant notification to update that software and it didn't work for me either.

I just forgot about it.

A better tool to use for diagnostics is the external HP 4 in 1 USB key.

the HP PC Diagnostics 4-in-1 USB Key is a diagnostic tool that supports a wide range of HP Desktop and Notebook PCs. This Key includes HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows, HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI, HP Vision Diagnostics.

I'm running W11 on my PC's and don't believe that the OS version is why the drive comes and goes.

Update:

Gave up for a while but now that I'm back at it I've discovered that after an uninterrupted boot, the SSD is always there, while any time I pause the boot, either to enter the bios menu or the boot sequence (which always only shows my HDD or "Boot from EFI file"), on boot up the SSD is always gone, regardless of whether or not any changes were made.

Does this possibly suggest anything?

Unfortunately, I would have no idea what the problem could be.

Ok, thanks Paul for all your help anyway.
