Hi:

All 640 G1's have SIM card slots.   What 90% of them don't have is the optional WWAN card.

Your notebook does not have the required WWAN card needed to connect to the cellular service.

In order for the SIM card to work, you need to have one of these mobile broadband adapters listed under the Network Adapters device manager category...

HP lt4120 Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X5 LTE Mobile Broadband Module
HP hs3110 HSPA+ Mobile Broadband Module

If you don't see either of those listed, then the SIM card is useless.

Where can I see the Network Adapter Device Manager settings.

HP Recommended

Right click on the Windows icon on the lower left side of your taskbar.

Click on Device Manager.

Click to expand the Network Adapters device manager category, and there you will see the names and model numbers of the wifi adapter and ethernet adapter.

If your notebook has one of the required WWAN adapters for the sim card to work, it will be listed there.

I highly doubt you will find any such device.

You are right , there is nothing like that there but does that mean the sim slot is useless or is there any other solution to this.

You can open up the notebook and if the antenna(s) are there to connect to a WWAN card, buy one of the supported models on eBay or someplace.

Below is the link to the service manual.  The WWAN card removal and replacement procedure can be found in chapter 5, pages 65 & 66.

Then you can buy one of the 3 WWAN cards listed in the service manual on page 65.

You can only buy the ones listed in the manual, and they must have the HP part number on them or they won't work,

Search by the HP part number.

You should probably be able to find any one of those models on eBay by searching by the part number.
