pavilion 15-br158cl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello!

I've been looking through threads and can't seem to find the correct answer. I'm looking to upgrade the HDD in a 15-br158cl to SSD. I would like to go the M.2 route, but have been noting some issues on this forum.

1. What type of M.2 SSD is supported in this model? Forgive me, but the literature does not read clearly to me.

Crucial's website indicates that this will work, but it is double sided: https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/pavilion-x360-15-br158cl/CT11936403

2. Can the M.2 SSD be used by itself with the HDD as a secondary drive? Can I use the M.2 by itself with no secondary drive?

Thanks for your time.

Well, since no one answered I went ahead and did it anyway.

The M.2 will work just fine with the link I provided.

It will take some work around to get the laptop to boot from the M2 SSD if the original HDD is still connected as the BIOS or windows 10 defaults to the HDD for some reason. Clone the HDD to SSD with the appropriate software and in the BIOS boot up from the SSD. Format AND delete the partition from the HDD. Even if you format the HDD there is some remnant data there that the BIOS will attempt to use to boot from so make sure to delete the partition in disk management. Create a new volume on the HDD and it will be usable again if you want to keep it as extra storage.

If you can boot up from the SSD a couple of times without issue you can also remove the HDD to simplify Bios and Disk management issues and no need to format and delete the partition. You may run into a check disc scan on boot, but simply let it run and the issue should resolve itself.

So far no issues.
