Currently it has 8 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (1 x 8 GB) . Its specs

      https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c06030457

You can add 8GB more to have 16GB (max) using the following fully compatible RAM

      https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/hp-17-by0061st/CT13036653

You can buy online form Crucial or from a good computer store.

Hi,

Your PC will support max 32GB of DDR4 2400Mhz (2x16GB) even if service manual mentions 16GB.

There are two slots and you have one 8GB stick and one empty slot at the moment.

You can buy from your preferred brand such as Crucial, Samsung...

On page 40 of service manual you can see the steps to install RAM:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06148960

An upgrade which would probably be much more noticeable than adding an extra 8GB of RAM would be to insert an M2 PCIe NVMe SSD for the OS and applications or replace the mechanical hard drive with an SSD.

Hope it helps,

David

I went with a new 8GB stick, but I am going to look into your suggestions as well!!!  Thank you!!

Please excuse my ignorance, but are you saying I have a choice of the SSD card or a SATA hard drive or can I have both?  I'm guessing that I can have one or the other.  Right now I have the 1TB SATA mechanical drive.

The best idea would be to insert an M2 PCIe NVMe SSD which would give a great performance boost to everyday performance. Something like the M2 PCIe NVMe Samsung 970 Evo Plus

Example:

Before buying the drive you should take a quick look if the slot is present on motherboard, as sometimes notebooks which did not come with M2 drive are missing physical slot. I believe yours is there.

So, if the slot is there you could install an M2 SSD, put OS and software on it, and keep the HDD for storage

Let me know if you need any further help,

David
