I've this laptop (studio g3 ) with only one hard drive ssd 240GB of origin.
I bought the ADATA SP550 ( m2 sata ) of 480GB and installed on the other adapter that is free .
After that the BIOS if it recognizes the drive but fails to start the OS ( ssd origin).
If I disconnect the ADATA m2 sata starts.

Dear,
I have also the HP studio 15 G3 and just received a Sandisk X400 - SATA III M.2 2280 SSD - 512GB module that should fit my second ssd slot. But unfortunately I can not find my extra SSD in my bios when I installed it.
Everything is up to date, and also no detection found in the device manager- disk managment- storage volumes.
I only want to use him as extra storage for games, photo's....
I hope someone can help me, because otherwise i have to bring the SSD back to the shop.
Regards, rstleo

If it's not recognised in the BIOS, then you have a problem. Try re-seating it (pull it right out, then insert it again.) Remember, it goes in at a really wierd angle (about 30 degrees from horizontal) then when it appears to be fully engaged, press it down and screw it in.
If it still doesn't show in the BIOS, then take it back.

Many thanks for your answer! I did already re-seating 3 times.
It did not show up when I look into hp diagnostic tools, component test, hard drive.
And could not found anything about the hard drives in my bios, (main page and advanced).
So i will take it back and ask for a new one..
Thx

Hello,
Online I ordered an Samsung 850 EVO M.2 to install in my ZBook Studio G3 as an extra SSD. Today I opened the laptop and saw that there was no bracket kit to install the SSD in (as expected).
Did anyone succeed installing an 2280 M.2 SSD after ordering: 840966-001 (Bracket Kit)?
Online I cannot find detailed information about the kit (for which type of SSD's it is, if screws are included etc., but I can order it online). The HP online chat service would not help me to answer my questions because I live in the Netherlands and they are only authorized to help US people.
Thanks in advance.

check yourself
unscrew whole back cover and check right side where small button cmos baterry is
here is the picture (from internet), where main m.2 ssd is already in place, and second , free, m.2 position next to it, but m.2 plate missing
a) if you got small tin triangle plate with one screw mounting hole for M.2, right below cmos battery, you're good to go, just buy M.2 2280 SSD
b) if you got TWO holes like on the picture below, you need to purchase m.2 mounting plate 840966-001 (7$), and get 2 small screw with wide flat head, the same as used to fix speaker on right side. not part of the kit
c) do not buy plate, just use adhesive tape like used for heatsinks etc 😉
I got Sandisk X300s SATA in second slot, working, in another zbook I got Intel 540s 2280 SATA, also detected by BIOS w/o problems, in both cases HP turbo drive G2 as a primary, which is Samsung 951 PCIE NVME.
I would recomend only Micron(retailed as Crucial), Samsung, Intel, too many people reported problems with ADATA not detected

You can add a regular 2.5" SATA drive to the Zbook 15 G3 (not sure how that compares to the studio). You need part number 848231-001, which you have to special order from calling the HP store (800-277-8164 option #3). The kit is 28 dollars from HP or I bought it for around 40 from one of Amazon's sellers. I just received it and installed without issue. The reason I bought from Amazon, was that they gave me a true date of delivery, where HP states out of stock.
This part number comes with the drive carrier and the little motherboard to SATA adapter cable (which shows up as SCSI). I used a 500GB SAMSUNG 840 SATA drive.
Hope this helps,
Joseph

zbook studio G3 - no brackets for 2.5" HDD in the box, no 2.5" position inside chassis, just 2x 2280 M.2 SSDs
zbook 15 & 17 G3 - HDD brackets in the box, incl SATA cable - only in case there is free 2.5"postion, not already used by HDD. 15 - 1 bracket max for 7MM HDD, 17 G3 - 2 brackets max for 9mm HDDs inc cables.
If missing - place warranty claim to your reseller to get it free from HP
ad zbook studio - here is picture how it shoul look like inside incl. second M.2 mounting plate, new studio just arrived from factory, plate was inside
