Howdy,

I just got this laptop and I'm loving everything about it except for the HD.  I have a spare 128g SATA SSD.  I wanted to slot that in this laptop but was unsure if this computer had a spare bay for an HD

Has anyone ripped this machine open before to look?  I'm a bit hesitant on opening before checking on here.

Also, any tips on slotting in a new drive on an HP would be welcome.

Thanks!

Mads

Hi,

There is one 2.5" hard drive bay and there is one M2 slot where you can add an M2 ssd.

On the link below you can see where the drives are located (click on solid state drive and then on hard disk drive in list on left)

Thanks for the reply.

From the manual, I can't see if there is a secondary harddrive bay.  Would I have to replace the stock hard drive or could I add an additional?

Also, since I don't use optical drives much, would it be possible to swap an SSD for the optical?

Thanks again,

Adam

This helps a  lot.  Especially that link.

I've been out of the hardware game for a bit and didn't know about the m.2 slots.

Time to start browsing newegg.

Thanks again for all of your help

Your welcome Mads.

M2 drives are SSDs. There are two types and both will work with your PC. M2 SATA3 are slower and M2 PCIe NVMe which are about 5 times faster. Both are compatible with your PC. You can see this on page 2 of service manual:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05493762

Before buying the M2 drive, open the PC and make sure the slot is present on the motherboard. In the past HP not always included the actual physical slot on the motherboard if the PC did not come with the M2 SSD. It should be there and it is easy to check. On page 43 of service manual you can see the steps to install the SSD. You can also use the videos I posted before.

Let us know if you need any further help.

All the best,

David

Thanks for the tip.  I'll make sure to open up my rig and have a look.

I had no idea the m.2s existed so now I'm in a whirl of research.

I got this Pavilion 15-cc183cl laptop only a couple of days with 1tb HDD. I have a XPG SX6000 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Internal SSD w/ DIY Heatsink (ASX6000NP-256GT-C).

Is it possible to add it additionally with the existing HDD and use this SSD as primary boot partition?
