HP Laptop 17t-cn000
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have a HP 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17t-cn000. It has an SSD, but I would like to add a 2.5 in SATA drive as a secondary hard drive. I have a secondary drive I was using on my old HP Omen (17-an011dx) that I'd like to just move over to the 17t-cn000.

1. Is it possible to add a 2.5 in SATA HD to the 17t-cn000 model?

(looking inside, it appears to have a place for it, however, there is no caddy or connectors.)

2. Would it work to just remove the entire HD assembly, the HD, caddy, and connectors, from the Omen and use it in the  17t-cn000?

3. If not, what parts do I need to purchase?

(Including the parts' product number if possible)

Please let me know if you need additional info.

Thank you!!

Kurt

Connector is the critical part. You can use a generic rubber 2.5 inch caddy for a hard drive and an SSD really does not even need a caddy since it has no moving parts.

You can use a knife and trim off any parts that keep it from fitting.

This is frustrating. Here is the Service Manual:

Manual

See pages 39 and 40. It shows a hard drive with a caddy and a ribbon cable connected to a zif adapter on the motherboard but the part is not listed.

This is the Omen Manual:

Omen Manual

See p. 40-41. The connectors seem similar but are a mirror image (right handed vs. left handed) so I do not think they are interchangeable. Perhaps you can route the ribbon cable the other way but I think that would have you inserting it into the zif connector upside down.

Thanks Huffer,

I see what you are saying. Not only are they mirrored, but the 17t-cn000 needs a longer connector since it's off to the side where the Omen's Zif is right at the end of the hard drive bay.

I'll have to keep hunting for part numbers.

In case someone happens along this thread with the same issue, I spoke with an HP sales rep, today, who said the HDD connector part number is M75893-001. She couldn't find info on the caddy.
