Envy 17t-bw000 product #2YY28AV
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently purchased an HP Envy 17t-bw000 laptop product #2YY28AV with a 512GB PCle NVMe M.2 SSD.  I need more storage.  The HP system configurator maxxed out with 1 TB hard drive and 256GB SSD.  Can I add a 1TB Sata hard drive to this machine?  Or better still, can I add a second SATA SSD?   Or would I be better off with replacing the existing 512GB SSD with a 1 TB SSD?

Thanks for any input - the forums have sparse info on upgrading this new model.

@Grifdude

Is it a 17t-bw0000 (4 zeros) ? Normally yes, your machine should have at least one spare 2.5" HDD/SSD bay and you can add 2TB (or more) of HDD/SSD to your machine. All you need are cable and rubber sleeve (and HDD/SSD).

Regards.

Thanks BH.

The computer box label shows 17t-bw000  but googling 17t-bw0000 brings up a bunch more listings - so guessing your are right.

I was concerned about an additional SSD not working because HP's configurator does not allow a 1G HDD with a 512G SSD - customer service said it was an "untested" configuration and I've seen some listings in forums indicating that some people have encountered mysterious incompatibility issues by adding additional storage and I'm trying to avoid buying a piece of hardware and having to try to return it if it doesn't work.

Hi,

It is a 17t-bw000  (three zeros) and here is support page

https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-envy-17-bw0000-laptop-pc/20283127/model/21869542/manuals?sku...

Naturally, you could replace the M2 drive with a larger capacity drive (no limit in capacity) however if you are looking only for storage the better idea is a 2.5" SATA3 HDD or SSD. The computer accepts 7mm thickness drives so any SSD will be fine, however with HDD you need to be careful with choosing the correct thickness  There is no problem with having a dual-storage configuration as long as the drives work well.

However, the problem is that it is nearly impossible to find the hard drive cable and bracket you would need to install a 2.5" drive. It is not available in HP parts store nor on the Web. It will probably become available sooner or later.

Hard drive cable        part number L20682-001

Hard drive rubber sleeve      part number L20702-001

So, I guess, the only real choice you have at the moment is to upgrade the M2 drive.

Here is the service manual where you can find all this info:

Hope it helps,

David

I bought the same config. 512gb m2 drive. Bought a HGST 1tb HDD 2.5" drive along with a cable. Both official parts. Does not work at all. Bios will not detect the drive. It Powers up just fine and spins but no partition manager can see it or edit it. I don't feel like taking my computer apart again. I scratched the back up a good bit due to the pesky pentalobe screws and me being too cheap to buy a 5 torx driver.

It seems HP just doesn't want you to use this config. Bios has no options concerning a 2nd HDD, I'm at a loss

Hi @elios

Can you let me know where you bought the cable as they are nearly impossible to find.

When you installed the drive, did you go into Disk Management and initialize the drive? it definitely should work.

David

https://www.impactcomputers.com/l20682-001.html has it listed and is the more reputable source, but I tracked one down on eBay. Model number was the same and only 25$ as opposed to 40. I tried disk MGMT. Booted from a few different Linux distros. The drive powers on just fine, but nothing sees it sadly. I'll pop it in anothet laptop and see if I can detect it and if so format it.

My 17t has a 512GB SSD and no secondary drive.  So I bought a 2TB Toshiba physical HDD to hold audio and video files for editing.  But upon opening the laptop, there's no HDD cable or rubber mount.

So with the 'official' cable either being impossible to find in stock or priced into the stratosphere, I counted the number of pins on the HDD connector on the motherboard (it has 12), and scoured the interwebs for other HP laptop HDD cables that also had 12 pins. Most had just 10, but I found one with 12, and took a chance on it for less than 15 us clams.  IT WORKS!!! I'm now using it with a 2TB Toshiba HDD (Physical, not SSD), and it works perfectly!!!

It's listed as a "Hard Drive Adapter HDD Cable For HP Envy X360 15-AQ M6-AR M6-AQ 450.07K06.0001" on the electronic bay.

I also ordered a rubber sleeve (for another HP laptop model), but it hasn't arrived yet, so for now I created a cradle made with some folded-over Gaff tape (Cloth tape with Rubber Adhesive) to hold the hdd in place securely and provide some shock resistance too.  (Again, this is temporary until the sleeve arrives in a couple of days...).

@JArtz

Many HP parts can be used for more than one series/models. In this case, probably the x360 15" and your 17t machine use same part.

There are some series of 17" and 15.6" machines use SAME motherboards.

Regards.
