Pavilion G6-1118si
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I recently downloaded and installed Windows 10 on my laptop as it was running slow with the factory OS Windows 7 Home Basic, after OS update it was still running slow, I opened the laptop up to check if I can purchase a faster CPU;  i5 - 1st or 2nd gen compared to my i3-370M. Sadly I discovered that the CPU is BGA and not PGA. I decided I will purchase extra RAM since my laptop manual says that I can upgrade my RAM from 4GB to 8GB, I have a Samsung 4GB 2Rx8 1333MHZ DDR3 PC3 - 10600s - 09 - 11 - F3 (M471B5273DH0 - CH9 1123) preinstalled and I purchased another ADATA 4GB 1333(9) 4Gx8 DDR3 PC3 - 10600  (ADATA AD3S1333W4G9-B) according to everything that I read they are compatible:

Followed procedure on point when I installed the ADATA RAM in the second slot, yet when I start my laptop up it loads and gives an error blue screen and then restarts and does the same, each time with a different error. When I run BIOS and a test it shows the 8GB RAM but my laptop doesn't want to start. All the information that I get when I Google what the problem can be directs me to Advanced Settings in BIOS? This is something I don't have. When I remove the extra RAM the laptop runs fine, I then reseated the RAM and I still have the same problem?

Notice how the memory modules are different in appearance? The original is dual rank i.e. 8 black blocks in two rows (ranks) on the side of the module facing up. The new is single rank (aka high density) with 4 black blocks in a single line (rank). Intel Core 1st gen HP models are very finicky about their memory and you must use dual rank aka low density modules or it will not work as you can see.

Also check again. The processor on that model should not be soldered to the motherboard. Here is the Service Manual and it definitely shows a removeable CPU...see p. 80. This is from the golden age of HP Manuals when the detail of the pictures is nearly photographic.

Thank you Huffer.

The CPU doesn't have a screw as indicated on the manual and it is also glued on the corners to the mobo? 20190529_091959.jpg20190529_092144.jpg

That is messed up. It is a socketed processor or supposed to be. BGAs do not have an arrow in the corner to guide you how to put it in the socket.

That is not a factory thing. What is the history of this machine?
