Hello,
I would like to extend the storage capacity of my laptop by adding a SSD to the empty M.2 slot I have on my EliteBook 850 G2.
I have trouble finding a SSD that is compatibile with my laptop. Also, what I find in the user manual is confusing, taking into consideration the system seems to accept both m.2 sata and m.2 pci-e SSD (2242 and 2260).
Please advise what I should choose to avoid incompatibility issues.
Thank you

Here is the Service Manual:
See page 35-36.
It lists both SATA and PCIe M.2 disks as compatible so you can use either.
The specified PCIe is this one:
256-GB, M2, PCIe-2×2 solid-state drive 803381-001
It is an M.2 2260 form factor with B + M edges so that is what you are going to have to find in either PCIe or SATA type.
If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hello,
Thank you for your reply.
The M.2 connector I find on the motherboard seems to have different pin format than the ones in the photo you posted.
Do you still think a SSD with B+M connector is going to work?
Many thanks

Is the length of the slot 60 mm or 80 mm? The pins in the slot can still be set up to deal with the gap in the B + M connector but at a minimum it looks like you can also use an "M" connector. Most of the NVME (PCIe) M.2s are "M" only configuration.

In terms on length it seems the board can accept both 2242 and 2260 SSDs (it has 2 holes for screws).
An 80 mm long M.2 SSD would not fit and this is mainly my concern because most M keyed SSDs are 80 mm long.
I will try find on the market an M.2 SSD SATA 2260 with B&M Keys in this case.
I will get back to you if everything worked out fine. 🙂
Thank you

Just tried an ADATA 2242 M.2 SATA B&M Keyed SSD.
It worked, and actually booted the operating system from it.
It seems this board can accept both 40 mm and 60 mm long SSDs.
Thanks for your support!
Kind regards,

I've added an M.2 2242 512 GB SSD (Sabrent NVMe Rocket Nano). The system can see it after plugging it in, but after cloning the SATA SSD I had in the system and checking bios settings to make sure the m.2 was selected as a viable boot device, the system does NOT see the m.2 drive as available to boot from. Taking the SATA out, the system complains that there is not boot drive and leaving it in and trying to F9 to boot options, the m.2 is not listed. The m.2 Windows partition is set as Active but not boot. How do I get it to be flagged as boot and will that make it available to boot from? The bios is set for UEFI.
