Welcome to our HP User Forum!
Yes, it is certainly possible to add an additional SATA SSD to your HP Laptop PC 17-By4000 (18B36AV).
My recommendation is to swap out your DVD+/-RW drive with a 9.5mm SATA to SATA 2nd SSD caddy adapter such as this one: https://www.amazon.com/Highfine-Universal-SSD-HDD-Enclosures/dp/B01MRI8YFN/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=IP84..., and fit it with (at least) a 1TB SATA SSD.
I could be mistaken, but I imagine that you're looking for a secondary storage drive because your primary (boot) M.2 NVMe SSD is (getting) too small.
The guy in this instructional video explains and refers to how to clone & swap your existing M.2 NVMe SSD to a larger M.2 NVMe SSD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc6rQE_qLmk&ab_channel=UberGeeks.
Hope this was helpful.

Thank you for the helpful and timely reply. However, my laptop does not have an optical drive. I do know how to "open " the case up as I've just upgraded the ram. Any further suggestions will be welcome. Thanks

You're welcome.
Part of my challenge is that specific product information is difficult to find online. The official "HP laptop PC 17-by4000" manual found here: HP Laptop PC 17-by4000 Manuals | HP® Customer Support, does not cover your model ("17-by1000~17-by1999")...
For example, you said your laptop does not have an optical drive. Do you mean your laptop looks like this -void of an ODD slot:
Or is your laptop fitted with a silver-colored ODD (Optical Disk Drive) bezel?
And what about the space allotted by earlier PC 17-Byxxxx laptops for an HDD or SSD:
This is one of those cases where it would be exceedingly helpful to actually see/handle the laptop and see what the options are, and what we can work with.
Kind Regards,
