I want to add an SSD to my laptop, I have opened it and there is an empty area for a drive. However the manual for this product says "An M.2 solid-state drive is installed into the M.2 connector that is used by an Optane memory module. You cannot install both a solid-state drive and an Optane memory module in the computer at the same time". Looking at the product page of the laptop it doesn't mention use of intel optane reguarding the storage. Is it possible to run with both drives installed?

@lirvine,

Thank you for posting your query on HP Community,

After reviewing the Product specifications found that your PC was shipped with 256 GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD hard drive Hard drive.

According to the Product specifications Intel optane memory is not installed.

In order to check the compatibility, I would recommend you go through the Maintenance and service guide of your notebook.

Here you will find the list of parts which are tested and compatible on your PC.

Yes, there is a M.2 slot available for the SSD and it does support Dual storage configuration. For detailed information, please go through the Maintenance and service guide.

Chapter 1. Product Description - Page number 3

Chapter 3. Illustrated parts catalog - Page number 40 & 41.

Please note, these are the parts which are tested on your PC, If you wish to try other parts you can try it at your own discretion, HP Doesn't recommend any upgrade/downgrade of any hardware parts or software that is bundled with the product. It may affect the manufacturer's warranty and performance.

Alternatively, You could replace the part on your own, use the HP Partsurfer to identify the part: Click here & order it via the HP Parts store (Click here).

Let me know if this helps!

Have a great day ahead!
