Elitebook 840 G3
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Hello. I have an HP Elitebook 840 G3 Notebook. It currently has an 256 GB SSD drive with Windows 10 installed. I want to add more storage by buying a new HDD, probably either 500 GB or 1TB. I've seen these on ebay for around $50. As I already have Windows installed, what are the necessary steps to install the new HDD?

Does it need to have windows installed also?

How do I format it? Do they come pre-formatted?

I apparently also need a HDD caddy, is that correct? Is this the best way to go, or should I upgrade my SSD drive instead?

Thanks!

hello

probably the caddy to add a SATA 2.5" SDD or HDD is not easy to find.

I added the SATA HDD without caddy. if you add a 2.5" SATA SSD, you don't need to fix it with the caddy, just use some tape to keep it in SATA connector.

when you get a new brand disk, you have to create a partition ,then format it.

You can keep Windows 10 installed on your 256GB SSD, you don't need to install Windows 10 on the second disk, if you want to use it just for data files.

In case you want to move your current Windows 10 installation from 256GB disk to the new disk, this is another story as you need a software to clone the current disk to the new disk.

bye

I've found the caddy on ebay. It seems like it should work and only cost $5. I only need the HDD as data storage, so thanks for letting me know that I don't need to install Windows on it. Do you have a link on instructions as to how to partition and format the new drive?
