HP Pavilion Notebook - 15-p189na (ENERGY STAR)

I have added two new 8gb ddr3 rams to my laptop but only one in memory slot 1 is showing. I cant understand why. both rams are identical. Has anyone got any ideas, or should I just settle for 8gb of ram. I really want 16gb of ram and would like the laptop then to be at its best.

Have you tried switching the modules in the slots to see if maybe a module is bad. Bad new memory sticks are rare, but do sometimes happen. If neither module is detected in the second slot then it is likely you have a bad memory slot which is the same as saying a bad motherboard. The manual says 12 gigs is the max but we know from experience 16 (2 x 😎 will work. Sometimes incompatible memory will prevent recognition of a second 8 gig module. Please identify the memory you installed.

this is the ram. I will try swapping tomorrow. I did try different make of ram before this and none worked so i sent it back and put the original ram back in. Then bought the above ram on the off-chance the new ram was faulty, as it wasn't sealed when it arrived. The above ram was sealed though.

Thanks for your reply and I'll let you know how I get on wirh swapping. Seems a shame if it's the motherboard as the laptops never been opened until now.

I swapped the ram over. so I put what was in memory slot 1 in memory slot 2 and the ram in memory in slot 2 in to slot 1 and now have 16gb ram. so I don't really know what's happened, maybe contacts were dirty. Anyway all ok now and laptop is as good as it can be. Next job is to upgrade to windows 11 before October 2025. Windows says I can't but looking into it I think it's possible.
