Hi everyone,
I have just purchased a ProBook 450 G5 I7 M.2 SSD 256GB. Can I increase storage by installing, in addition to the existing M.2, a 2.5 inch 1TB HDD with SATA connection as a second drive?
- In the HP manual it says regarding the 2.5 inch drive 'supports HDD with HP 3D Driveguard'. What does that mean and should I worry about it when buying the hdd?
- Once the 2.5 inch drive is installed, can the M.2 remain the primary drive.
- Can I use an inexpensive HDD, i.e would this product be ok - WD 1TB 2.5" Black Edition - SATA3 - 7200rpm - 32MB Cache?
Thanks

It is not used for an SSD.

You may have to purchase a Hard Drive Hardware Kit. If your notebook was delivered with an M.2 SSD as the storage drive, the hardware may not be present, If would be a good idea to open the base and see if there is a hard disk caddy present. See the mass storage devices section in the Maintenence & Service guide.

Hi,
Yes, you can install an extra hard drive and the M2 drive will remain boot drive. There are a few things you need to check. Look in the hard drive bay and make sure the SATA socket is present for the hard drive. (page 43of service manual)
As @erico stated you should check if the "Hard Drive Cover" is there which goes around the hard drive and keeps it in place in the bay. If not you can either purchase it (part number L00836-001) or use some strong double sided tape to keep the drive in place.
You do not need to worry about driveguard which protects the drive against damage from external shocks.
Now the drive needs to be 7mm thick (maybe a little thicker with the double-sided tape. I believe the WD Black drive you mentioned is 9.5mm.
Example:
Hope it helps,
