I have an HP Laptop 15-dy1xxx that came with with 12M (8+4) of RAM installed. I haven't cracked open the back yet, but the documentation for my model says that the laptop can be expanded to 16M.
- Can I remove the 4M RAM and replace it with an 8M of RAM, leave the existing 8M RAM installed, for a total of 16M?
- What specs should the new RAM be?
- Will the laptop automatically recognize and use the new RAM?
- What is the recommended brand or part number for use on this laptop?
I added RAM to a different laptop once but it was ten years ago. I remember it as being fairly straight forward. But, I want to make sure I have the right RAM before I crack the back of the laptop.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Hi,
You can upgrade to 32GB of DDR4 2666 MHZ RAM
Example
So you can use a 8GB module in the 4GB slot. For dual channel mode you usually need the an exact pair of RAM sticks so you could consider 2 x 16GB modules. You can use faster RAM , it will run at 2666 MHz
