Hi,

Is it possible to add extra SSD in HP EliteBook Folio 9480m? If yes, which type of SSD will be fit?

Here is the Service Manual:

Manual

See page 40 and 41. There is only room for one full-sized 2.5 inch hard drive or SSD. It can also hold an M.2 mSATA mSSD which can be used as an acceleration cache drive or as a boot/OS drive. If you look at page 1 of the Manual you can also see that an mSSD is not available if you have a Self-encrypting drive. So, for us to give advice we need to know what you have because that will determine what else you can add or how else your storage can be configured. You have a very complicated and flexible computer.

Currently, I do have 180 GB SSD with the laptop. I'm looking for a possibility to expand storage. Any solution?

Either a bigger SSD or add an M.2 SSD and use it for storage. The Manual picture of the mSSD is not accurate. They look like this:

3 prongs not 2.

Here is specification I got from quickspec document:
Drive Weight < 10 Grams
Capacity 120 GB
Height 0.276 in (22 mm)
Width 2.76 in (42 mm)
Interface SATA 3 (6 Gb/s)
As M.2 SSD has several types, any suggestion which one should be used? There are specification of width dimension but not the length.
Should it be type Key M or Key B?
It does support only SATA but not PCIe, right?

I did a google image search and a general google search based on the part numbers of the 32 and 120 gig mSSD M.2 drives from the manual and could find no picture or detailed information as to the exact form factor.

I would open it up and measure the size of the space provided for the mSSD drive from the insertion point to the screw hole and also examine the insertion point to identify the correct interface.

Yes there is no PCIe slot as on a desktop in which to insert a PCIe drive.

The picture you shown is Adata SP600 M.2 2242 Solid State Drive.

However, in my folio 9480m, it has socket for 2 prongs.

In terms of length, 22X44 (short one) seems to match with the screw hole.

Wonder how to insert?

Please advise.

Thanks,

LL

Moreover, how can I find instruction on how to use the m.2 as boot drive. Any comment. Thanks, LL

Hi, wich m2 driver do you have buy??

can you explain the correct mode to set m2 driver for boot?

thx a lot

Hi, Did you ever resolve this?  I would like to add an M.2 SATA drive but it is unclear with the manual's info, and the hardware.  Like you said it appears as though the receptacle in the computer does not match the M.2 card.
