ZBook Studio G4 (Y6K32EA)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Is there a way to install an additional SSD M2 drive on the HP ZBook Studio G4 Mobile Workstation (Y6K32EA) ? In the maintenance manual there is only information about replacing the drive. In there there is a statement: The system board includes two M.2 solid-state drive connectors. Only use the connector shown by callout (1) in the following image. Do not use the connector shown by callout (2).

Does that mean that the second connector is useless in that model?

Yes,

You can have 2 M2 SSDs in your PC. If you look in the service manual on page 2 of manual you can see that the second drive is only available if the first drive has been selected. (So in the picture you mentiond it is talking about one drive which has to be inserted in first slot).

If you look at the HP video for replacing M2 SSD (mini-card) on link below you see that at the end of video they also mention second drive.

However if in the first slot you have an M2 Sata, you can only place an M2 Sata in second slot (also in Raid). If in first slot you have a M2 PCIe you can place M2 Pcie in second slot (no Raid).

Hope it helps,

Something just dawned on me: Will installing additional SSD by myself void my warranty?

HP Recommended

I have learnt on this forum that upgrading the RAM or hard drive is accepted and will not void warranty. Naturally do not break anything while performing upgrade :generic:

Hey David,

The answer is clear.

I have a PCIe ssd in the first one. So according to the documentation I can have either PCIe or SATA as a second M.2 SSD right?

BUt is there a performance issue when combining them? Will the first PCIe SSD be slower if the second SSD is SATA?

Hi,

Yes you are correct, you can use Sata or PCIe drive in second slot. No, if you use Sata it will have no effect on the performance of the first drive which is usin PCIe lanes.

Hope it helps,

David

Hey David,

Thanks for the quick reply. Good to know that there is no impact on performance.

I have followed your Q&A regarding adding a 2nd hard drive to your HP ZBook Studio G4 - I have same unit - but was told by HP that a 2nd drive could not be added to my machine because I have the 4K DreamColor display. I haven't opened up my machine to confirm what I was told by HP. I am curious to learn if you were successful with your install.
