Advice for RAM UPGRADE

4 Gig DDR4 2400 but running only at 1866, with a cas#latency of 13, i think is the RAM i got in my laptop.

Is it safe to buy an 8Gig RAM-2400 with cas#latency of 17 and have it installed/added so I'd get 12Gig of RAM???

Will it help improve my laptops performance? Will there be any compatibility issues?

According to page 2 of my laptops maintainance and user guide (http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05493256.pdf)

I can have Two non-customer-accessible/upgradable memory module slots of  RAM; DDR4-2400 bridge to DDR4-1866 - I dont know what this exactly means.

It can support up to 2 x 8 GB of memory.

I would get the DDR4-2400 memory since it is only going to run at 1866 MHz anyway.

 Can I continue on using the currently installed SK Hynix RAM card together with the new one you suggested as I install it later without any compatibility issues? it's Cas#latency is 13. The Crucial you recommended is 17.

or should I remove the currently installed SK Hynix card and just use the new Crucial 8Gig?

You're very welcome.

You should be able to just add the Crucial memory to the existing one.

The one in there now is CAS 17 too, but when it runs at 1833 MHz the CAS goes to 13 as will the Crucial memory.

Well, I think this case is closed.
But just for the sake of educating some old folk like me who barely has any knowledge about tech, one last question please.

Is there a way for my laptop to run it's RAM faster than 1866Mhz? I couldnt exactly understand why i need to buy a DDR4 2400 RAM but couldn't use its full speed.

Glad to have been of assistance.

The speed the memory runs at depends on how fast the processor can run the memory at, and your notebook's processor can only run the memory at 1866 MHz.  That is why the memory runs at 1866 MHz.

So there is nothing you can do to increase the memory speed and since the processor is an integral part of the motherboard you can't upgrade the processor either.

...unless I buy a new much faster laptop is my only option, probably. Hehe
