Borrowed my friend's usb-c charger. After a few minutes of use, I started to smell something burning. I therefore unplugged the usb-c charger. I instead grabbed my own barrel-plug charger, but it wasn't working. I shutdown my pc, and saw that it was charging when off. I therefore turned on my computer again, and it promptly stopped charging.

Now it only charges (using the barrel plug) when off. It will still charge using usb-c, but I don't dare use the usb-c charger since it seems to have caused something to go terribly wrong inside my computer. The smell is also why I assume this problem is hardware related.

What can I do about this issue? Must I really send this off to HP to be fixed, and must  I really pay for it when it is an issue that is clearly caused by something out of my control?

You need to make a warranty claim and unless asked directly I would not volunteer about borrowing an adapter and the burning part. In retrospect I think you will have to agree that was not a good idea. Good luck.
