My friend spilled a ton of whiskey all over the left side of my laptop keyboard and i immediately turned it off and took the battery out and let it dry for 24 hours. Then, once no liquid was coming out of it anymore, I turned it back on, and everything seemed fine except my shift key was randomly activating even when I wasn't pressing it. I can only type normally now because I used KeyTweak to disable the left shift key and am typing using the right shift key to capitalize. The fn key also seems to be randomly activating, since when I try to press the button for backlighting of my keyboard, it thinks I'm holding fn and will trigger f5 instead. I have tried removing the key cap and wiping it down with a non-conductive alcohol wipe, but that didn't seem to help. Will I have to get a new keyboard, and if so, where and what should I get?

The problem is not the alcohol; instead, it's the water in the booze -- it probably shorted stuff out.

The key problems are only the surface and almost certainly, more damage was done than that.

The ONLY way to know for sure is to take or send it to an HP Service Center and pay a LOT of money for them to run full diagnostics on it, and after that, to disassemble it to repair or replace any damaged components.

And, if the motherboard is damaged, the cost of repair can easily exceed the cost of replacing the laptop -- because (as far as I know) liquid spill damage is NOT covered under the warranty.

So... what should I do? Are you recommending that I get a new laptop then? Because it sounds like it wouldn't be worth it to try to get it fixed...

@violyre

That depends entirely on how much damage was done and what it then costs to repair that.

You can have it examined and get a repair estimate -- and then decide if the repair costs are worth it.

Do you think I should pay to get it checked out first, or just try to get a new keyboard and replace it myself to see if that fixes it? The keyboards on ebay are like $50

If you're confident you can replace the keyboard, then go ahead.  I have done that on numerous laptops but the work has ranged from easy to very hard.  The easy ones only require removing a few screws; the hard ones require disassembling the laptop -- which risks damaging it.

Your call.
