Omen Gaming Laptop 16-wd0353ng

All of my USB ports, including the USB C port stopped working suddenly while gaming. Did a driver uninstall/reinstall, updated the bios, hard reset/power cycle, checked that CMOS is not the issue, adjusted USB power management, checked with the HP hardware diagnostic tool. Everything checks out in the Device Manager, there are no errors/warnings.

Could it be the USB Controller? Would that require a new motherboard?

Hi @DarkCLC

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for your patience—and I’m truly sorry you’re facing this issue. When all USB ports suddenly stop working, especially during gaming, it can feel like everything’s come to a halt.

Let’s walk through the steps to resolve the issue.

Power Cycle the Laptop

  • Shut down the laptop completely.
  • Disconnect all peripherals and the power adapter.
  • Hold the power button for 15 seconds to discharge residual power.
  • Reconnect and power on.

Check Device Manager

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Right-click each USB Root Hub and select Uninstall device.
  • Restart the laptop to allow Windows to reinstall them automatically.

Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

Check USB Power Management Settings

  • Go to Device Manager > USB Root Hub > Properties > Power Management tab.
  • Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”

Test with HP USB Check Tool

  • HP offers a tool to verify USB port functionality.
  • You can find it here:
    HP USB Check Tool

If none of these steps restore USB functionality, and all ports—including USB-C—remain unresponsive, it’s possible the USB controller has failed. Since it’s typically integrated into the motherboard, a hardware replacement may be necessary.

Let me know how things go or if you’d like help with any of the steps above. You’ve been incredibly thorough already, and I’m here to support you every step of the way.
