HP Laptop PC 17-by4000 (18B35AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I've now run the test and learned the results are in Main Menu - Test Logs - Save Logs. More information I got is hp.com/go/techcenter/PCDiags

Batter Check: Primary - OK (0)

Primary: Logic State - OK (0) Charge State - Not Available

AC Adapter Test: WARNING

The Smart Adapter Feature failed to return valid data.

Symptom [PR] Result: Warning/Failure ID NA

I have no idea what to do now!  When I noticed the adapter wasn't charging -- in spite of the charging sign showing], I was advised to wipe the connection with alcohol. I did that and it was fine. I think I did it a second time a while after with the same result. Today, I'm stuck at 29%, charging icon on, alcohol wipe did nothing.

Well, well, well....  I just looked at my laptop and see that the battery is 100% charged!  What on Earth is going on? This has happened before, but not spontaneously as I recall. I think I had to re-insert the connector to my laptop.

I'm still hopeful that someone can tell me what's going on and how I might not have to keep going through this very annoying situation.

Hi  @nbourne,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand your concern and thank you for sharing the update and the diagnostic results. I am glad to hear that your battery eventually reached 100% charge, and don’t worry let me check and help you with this.

To better understand the situation, could you kindly confirm a few details?

  • Is the issue occurring with the original HP Smart AC adapter that came with the notebook?
  • Have you noticed any damage, looseness, or excessive heat around the charging cable, connector, or power port?
  • Does the charging indicator turn on immediately when you connect the adapter?
  • Have there been any recent BIOS, Windows, or driver updates before the behaviour started?
  • Does the battery percentage sometimes remain unchanged even though Windows shows the charging icon?

Based on the results you shared, the battery itself passed the HP Hardware Diagnostics test, which is a positive sign. However, the "AC Adapter Test: WARNING - The Smart Adapter Feature failed to return valid data" may indicate an intermittent communication issue between the adapter, charging port, system board, or the adapter identification circuitry.

In the meantime, kindly try the following steps:

  1. Perform a hard reset: (Link for steps - click here )
    • Shut down the notebook.
    • Disconnect the AC adapter.
    • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
    • Reconnect the adapter and turn the notebook back on.
  2. Check the HP BIOS version and update it if a newer version is available for your model.
  3. Test the adapter connection:
    • Ensure the connector is fully seated in the charging port.
    • Observe whether the charging icon or LED changes when the connector is gently moved.
  4. Run the HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics again and pay particular attention to the AC Adapter Test results.
  5. If available, test with another compatible genuine HP adapter to determine whether the behaviour follows the adapter or the notebook.

I hope this helps.
