Battery started going bad within the 2yr warranty. Contacted HP and was asked to send it in. However COVID lockdowns were going into effect and I didn't want to risk waiting months to get it back (and it turns out that is exactly what would have happened). But we're out of the woods (sort of). So what happens now?

Why are these batteries going bad within warranty? Is it true HP doesn't have spares of this model? How have these not been recalled?

Now, Same Answer:

Contact HP and explore your current options.

OR

Purchase a battery and fix the problem yourself.

========================================================================

Batteries are all manufactured by companies that specialize in this technology.

Companies, including HP, purchase batteries from the companies who manufacture batteries.

Unfortunately, battery technology is not perfect.

Yes, it is true that HP does not keep all batteries in stock.

The decision by a company to recall an item - any item - is not something for which we can provide an answer.

"Pick one":  Speculation on the subject is widespread and the personal opinions vary as well.

===============================================

"Fat" Battery / Bloated Battery / Swollen Battery – Sealed / Internal Battery

  • Swollen battery might be hiding OR there might be evidence that the battery has inflated.  For example, notebook case is warped, touchpad stops working, “odd” bulging near the keyboard.

  • If the battery is in a swollen or bloated condition, the battery must be removed from the computer and replaced.  There are no other remedies, tests, or useful options.

Open Product Home

Open Category Manuals

Find and open the Service and Maintenance manual

Search for "Battery" to find the replacement procedure and part number(s)

If the part is not available from HP Parts Store

then

Purchase a compatible battery from your favorite local online merchant.

For example, if you like, check for the part at Amazon.
