Just purchased an external CD/DVD RW drive GDR-D20N and I can play CD's just fine but I can NOT burn CD's. Windows Media Player displays in the upper right "Connect a burner and restart the player" message.

Link to the burner? I googled the GRD-D20N didn't come up with anything. My first thought is it takes more power to burn discs, so sometimes external burners will come with a wall wart to give the burner the power it needs.

Correction to original post my drive is a GDR-D20N drive.

Note that I have tried everything on the following HP support page and none of it worked. I did manage to mess up the registry and have to restore my backup. ;o)

The driive model you gave us is an internal model, but you refer to it as an external drive.

It's definitely an external drive.  That is the model displayed in the device manager for the CD/DVD - "HL-DT-ST GDR-D20N USB Device"

I found this great information though even this did not work for me...

Per this document some laptops are not configured to work with external drives.....
