Spectre X360 13-4108na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I want to replace the factory fitted liteon l8h-256v2g-hp M.2 SATA SSD in my Spectre X360 (K3D89EA#ABU / 13-4108na) with a larger drive (ideally 1TB) and preferrably something faster.

Looking at page 2 of the following document http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04807803 it states:

Support for single PCIe / SATA M2 solid-state drive configuration as storage (scope M2 2260/2280 DS solid-state drive) in the following configurations:●
512-GB solid-state drive supporting three-level cell (TLC)●
256-GB solid-state drive supporting TLC●
128-GB solid-state drive supporting TLC

But how can I confirm if the PCIe support is for AHCI and/or NVMe, whether this is PCIe 2.0 or 3,0, how many lanes it has (so I know if I would get full read/write speeds of drive), and whether the reason only up to 512-GB support is listed is due to a system board limitation or because 1TB M.W 2280 SSDs were not available at the time this model was released?

1TB prices are coming down, so it seems to be a good time to look at upgrading, but I want to be sure about compatibility and what speeds I would get as there is ot point paying for a NVMe drive that offers 3,200 MB/s / 2.300 MB/s read/write speeds if I will not get anywhere near this performance due to system board limitations.

I bought the Spectre in early 2016 so the warranty has long since expired.

And I am aware that upgrading to NVMe is not straight forward due to having to add NVMe drivers for the BIOS to recognise the drive.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to our humble abode, the family and tech-friendly house of HP Forums!

I'll be your host for the day, they call me the Riddle_Decipher.

Brilliantly diagnosed and concluded, I must say you've done quite a lot of research on this, that said, to answer your query,

HP has only tested up to 512GB on your device and doesn't support or recommend upgrading beyond the same, however, you may upgrade to 1TB at your own discretion to check if it works (personally, I suggest you take it to a store and have a tech run you by the spare 1TB SSD and check if it works before you purchase one).

Also, about the NVMe support, if it was a part of it, it should show up on the user maintenance guide, however, since it hasn't, it would go to show that the device doesn't support the same.

And that it only supports TLC.

I hope that answers your query,
