Hi everyone,
I'm looking into buying an HP EliteBook x360 1040 G8. I would like to buy a refurbished one where the battery capacity is not known: HP sells two variants of this laptop, one with a 54 Wh battery and one with a 77.5 Wh battery.
The seller has not listed and hasn't replied to my query on the battery capacity of the laptop they are selling. I will likely replace the battery anyway as the health will have deteriorated, but I worry that if I am sent a 54Wh battery, I will not be able to replace it with a 77Wh battery due to the differing sizes.
Can I replace a 54 Wh battery on the HP EliteBook x360 1040 G8 with a 77.5Wh battery? In other words, are they compatible with each other and the same size?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Dylan

Hello dcode.
According to your laptop's manual, the 1040G8 systems can be fitted with either battery, meaning they're compatible with both 54Wh and 78Wh replacement parts. However, these parts are not of the same size due to the difference in capacity.
This picture of the opened up 1040G8 taken from the Laptopmedia review, shows the motherboard with the smaller battery installed.....
.........while this is what it looks like with the larger 78Wh battery, as seen on the Notebookcheck review (of the identical previous generation) 1040G7.
One can also compare these two disassembly videos hosted on Youtube, the Laptopmedia video with the 54Wh battery pack and the Official HP Support video with the larger 78Wh.
By comparing the pictures and carefully watching the videos, it's apparent that HP technicians have made it possible to also accommodate the larger size battery by placing some extra screw holes and adding some small parts that fill the gaps when the 54Wh battery pack is used. The HP manual I linked to above doesn't mention anything about having to use different parts depending on battery size -on other models for example the fan/heatsink assembly is different depending on battery size as seen on some G9 business laptops- so I think that this is a pretty straightforward procedure of just removing the previous battery and any excess parts and fastening the new larger battery in place.
