Now that I am in college studying computer science, my computer specs aren't up to par. Is there anything I can upgrade in terms of performance or storage? I'd like to know before investing in a new computer.

Hi:
There isn't much you can do to upgrade the notebook.
It already comes with the fastest type (NVMe) SSD available, and unless you need more storage, you don't need to replace that.
It comes with a single 8 GB memory chip, so you can install an 8 GB memory chip in the empty slot and have 16 GB of memory running in dual channel mode.
Below is the link to the service manual where you can find the memory upgrade info and removal and replacement procedure.
Maintenance and Service Guide HP 15 Laptop PC
This should be a compatible 8 GB memory chip for your notebook.
Crucial 8GB DDR4-2666 SODIMM | CT8G4SFRA266 | Crucial.com
If you want a larger capacity NVMe SSD, look into either the Samsung 980 (not 980 Pro) NVMe SSD, or the Western Digital Blue SN570 NVMe SSD.
You can get them in 500 GB or 1 TB storage capacities.
