My keyboard is behaving weirdly since yesterday. My left arrow key enters '0' and the right arrow key enters '4' when pressed. The delete key enters '/' when pressed. I tried changing the language settings in the control panel but it didn't work. Num lock key toggling gives another dimension to this problem making left key and right key work sometimes and sometimes they just don't. This happens everywhere ie. notepad, google chrome, microsoft word, etc.
See the following sentence for example where i press the left and right key 5 times respectively.
004040404
The left arrow key just inserts zeroes keeping the cursor behind the last zero entered. The right key inserts 4 leaving a gap everytime. I don't understand what is happening. I didn't spill anything on my keyboard. It was just working fine until yesterday.
I hope there's a solution for this.

Hi @vivek_rana,
Good Day. Thank you for posting your query in the HP community. I read the post regarding the keyboard printing incorrect characters. I will be delighted to assist you here. I will be really glad to assist you here. 🙂
Superb description and spectacular troubleshooting and commendable diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂
For better clarity, I would require more information regarding this to assist you:
- Did this happen after a recent software or app update?
It looks like a hardware issue with the keyboard.
Please run the keyboard diagnostics from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-15-n200-notebook-pc-series/6529948/model/6622575/do... please run the keyboard diagnostics listed under Component tests of UEFI diagnostics.
Test all the characters. If the keyboard fails it will give you a failure code. Please make a note of it and it needs to be replaced by contacting HP phone support.
- HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/?openCLC=true
- Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
- Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
- Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
- Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.
They will be happy to assist you immediately. If the unit is under warranty repair services is taken care of by the manufacturer’s warranty.
You could also try the keyboard outside of Windows in the command prompt to further isolate the issue:
- Power down the unit. When you power it back up, immediately tap the F11 key gently several times.
- It takes you to recovery manager. Here please select the option “Troubleshoot”. Then please select “Advanced options “ and “command prompt”
- Type all the keyboard characters in this black window especially the keys that do not work correctly.
- If F11 does not take you to recovery manager, please keep tapping the “ESC” gently several times the instant you power on the unit. It takes you to the startup menu and you could press F11 from there to go to recovery manager.
If diagnostics pass or all the keyboard keys type correctly then please perform a Microsoft Push button reset from this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04742289 and it will fix the issue. This will not cause you to lose data.
This should do the trick for you.
Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂
Cheers!
