My understanding is that this laptop should have two RAM slots available. However when I opened it today, there is only one slot, and that is occupied by the stock 4gb RAM card that came withwith the machine.

The specs of your machine is

 

         https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c06227127

 

It has  Intel Pentium® Gold 4417U (2.3 GHz, 2 MB cache, 2 cores) processor therefore it only has one slot of RAM. Only Core processor machines have 2 slots of RAM.

 

You can replace 4GB with 8GB (max) using

       https://www.crucial.com/memory/ddr4/ct8g4sfs824a/ct14549226    (will run at 2133MHz)
