if I use my laptop while I am charging it for an extended period of time, does my battery damage ?

No.

 

Doing that will not damage the battery.

If you have a SMART AC adaptor then the AC and the laptop work together to regulate the charging of the battery.

SMART AC jack with SMART pin.

 

It will prevent the battery from being over charged and help extend the life of the battery.
