Product: HP EliteBook 8460p
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hello. I have an HP EliteBook 8460p.

I recently updated the BIOS to version F.67 using HPQFlash in Windows. The update completed successfully, but since then I’m getting the following error on every startup:

“BIOS Application Error (501)”

However, if I press Enter, the system continues to boot normally into

Windows 8.1 Pro, and everything works.

I’ve read that this error is caused by a missing HP BIOS Application Environment / UEFI Diagnostics, and that it can be fixed by installing HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI (formerly distributed as sp96086.exe?).

Unfortunately, this tool is no longer available on your website or FTP.

Could you please provide a working download link or an updated replacement utility?

Thank you in advance!

Resolving "BIOS Application Error (501)" on HP EliteBook 8460p

The "BIOS Application Error (501)" typically indicates an issue related to the BIOS installation or corruption of BIOS components. Here are a few steps to resolve this error:

  1. BIOS Recovery:

    • Perform a BIOS recovery to try and replace any corrupt BIOS files. This involves downloading the BIOS update from HP’s official website and following the recovery instructions.
    • You can access the latest BIOS version by visiting the HP Support Page and entering your product details.
  2. Reset the BIOS to Default Settings:

    • Access the BIOS setup utility by restarting your laptop and pressing the F10 key as the system starts.
    • Once in the BIOS setup, navigate to the "Exit" menu and select "Load Setup Defaults."
    • Save changes and exit. This might resolve minor issues causing the error.
  3. Clear CMOS:

    • Perform a BIOS CMOS reset, which might involve removing the battery from the motherboard (consult with a professional or refer to the service manual if you're unsure).
  4. Re-flash the BIOS:

    • Re-download the correct BIOS version for your model from the HP Support Page.
    • Use a USB flash drive and follow instructions for a manual BIOS update, ensuring the USB is formatted correctly with the update files.
  5. Contact HP Support:

    • If the above steps don’t resolve the error, contact HP Support for further assistance. They might suggest additional diagnostic steps or service options.

Note:

Ensure all steps, especially resets or re-flashes, correspond exactly with instructions from official HP resources specific to the HP EliteBook 8460p to prevent further issues.
