I need to update the BIOS, but i have a incompatible O.S. (windows 10, when the recommended O.S. is Windows 8 or less). Will be the update safe for my pc?

thanks...

You're very welcome.

Can you boot into W8 from an external hard drive?

If you can, what is the risk of updating the BIOS via the USB connection?

Normally the BIOS update runs through the internal components.

I would be scared to do that.

Here is what I would do instead...

Make a system image of your current W10 installation using the free Macrium Reflect software.

https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree

Get a portable hard drive large enough to save the image on.

The software will also prompt you to make a rescue USB flash drive or DVD which you boot from to access the image stored on your portable hard drive.

Once you have done the above, install W8, update the BIOS and then restore your W10 image.

Hi:

I would not risk updating the BIOS in W10 as it could wreck your PC.

Install a supported operating system to update the BIOS, then reinstall W10.

First, thanks very much for the reply.

I have an idea: if i install windows 8 in my second external hdd (100gb) and than i install the bios update? If i can do this, i save all my files and my programs!

Thanks very much!!! You are a genius, i will do that. Lol i havent thought that installing bios update with usb hdd is dangerous! Actually the pc is very slow, the cpu is replying bad with this bios. I have a question: i had a updated bios a few months ago, and i changed the hdd and the bios returned in the native version! I dont know...

You're very welcome.

I once ran a video BIOS update on an old Dell Latitude notebook from a USB flash drive instead of copying the file to the hard drive.   What possessed me to do that, I have no idea.

BIG MISTAKE!!!   The file ran and then the notebook froze up, and I had a paperweight on my hands.

I stripped the hard drive, wifi card and memory from it, and tossed it in the trash.

Why the BIOS went back to an earlier version just because you changed the hard drive, unfortunately that I do not know.

I never heard of that happening before.

Thank you, i have the last question: can i use the windows backup tool for create a system image?

HP Recommended

Yes, you can use the W7 image backup tool in W10, but I must say that is not as reliable as the Macrium tool.

Maybe do both.  LOL!
