ExaPresario V6500mple: Pavilion 6530
Microsoft Windows Vista

Hi,

I've got a Presario V6500 currently running Vista (as supplied). It has 2GB RAM and BIOS F.07

I'd like to double the RAM and install Windows 10 Pro.  I'm advised that 2GB Ram is the maximum the system will support, but wonder if that's a BIOS limitation. Is an upgrade available (and if so how do I obtain it) or is this just too old to update?

You're very welcome.

The product number you posted indicates that your notebook is a COMPAQ PRESARIO V6642EM NOTEBOOK PC, that has an AMD Turion processor.

Below are the info and exe file links for the last BIOS update HP released for that model PC:

Info:  F.34   March 30, 2011

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp52001-52500/sp52477.html

Exe:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp52001-52500/sp52477.exe

I once had a dv6700 notebook with the AMD Turion TL-60 processor and mine ran 2 x 2 GB of PC2-6400 memory just fine.

The service manual for your notebook indicates that your notebook can run 2 x 2 GB of memory...see chapter 1, pages 2 & 3.

Hi:

What is the product number of your V6500?

Use this guide to find that information.  Please do not post the serial number.

Hi Paul

Thanks for the prompt response. The label on the base of the machine says "Product Presario V6500" and the PN is GT406EA#ABU. Some further info on the BIOS:  Phoenix BIOS 4.0 Release 6.1 Version F.07 Build time 08/09/07 16:43:30

Hi Paul

Thanks for your advice. I updated the BIOS and got hold of two 2GB sticks which installed with no problems. I've installed Windows 10 Pro 64 (had a spare unused CD and licence !) and have updated to 1809.  WiFi and sound working fine. But I can't find a driver for the video - Nvidia MCP67M. HP no longer support the V6500 series and it doesn't appear to be listed on NVidia's site, but and least one "Driver finder" site claims to supply it (but only if I take out an annual sub!) Any suggestions?

You're very welcome.

For the graphics, see if this works...

Download and run this graphics driver.  You will probably get an unsupported operating system error.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp42501-43000/sp42635.exe

Close out of any error windows.

Go to the device manager, click to expand the Display adapters device manager category.

Click on the Microsoft basic display adapter listed there.

Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update driver.

Select the Browse my computer for drivers option and browse to the location where the driver folder was created when you ran the file.

That folder will be located in C:\SWSetup\sp42635.

Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked and see if the driver installs that way.

Then restart the PC.

Thanks once again Paul. I really appreciate your effort. Worked like a charm - resolution back to 1280x800. I'm particularly keen to get this elderly laptop up and running as the screen aspect ratio is 16:10 which matches my desktop.

Anytime.

Glad to have been of assistance.
